Problems with Gluten? No Doc ...I'm good.
When a patient comes to me with neurologic and brain related symptoms; I inevitably ask them how they tolerate gluten.
Many people look at me with an expression like... "Doc, that is so 2011." And then respond....
"Oh, I don't have a problem with gluten. My digestion is just perfect"
Maybe true, but before you move on from avoiding gluten for your neurological concern consider this...
Thanks to research done Dr. Maios Hadjivassiliou of the United Kingdom and founder of the Sheffield Institute of Gluten-Related Disorders (SIGReD). We now know that you can have gluten sensitivity that primarily affects your nervous system. Some consequences of this extraintestinal manifestation of gluten sensitivity are chronic headaches, adhd, anxiety, brain fog, ataxia, tremors, and migraines.
The mechanism is not clear yet. But the correlation is hard to argue. In the meantime, I continue to discuss a reduction or complete elimination of gluten in most of my patients with neurological conditions
